Freemium is one of those funny-sounding portmanteau words. It’s a combination of the words “free” and “premium.”
When I talk about free to play MMORPGs in this blog, I am actually referring to freemium MMO games or those MMOs that have both free and premium (paid) stuff in it. Basically, these are MMO games that are free to play forever with no time limit but there is content that you can buy for real life money. Premium content can be expansions, upgrades, items, etc.
Freemium is actually a sound business model that many internet companies use. In fact, this blog is hosted for free by WordPress.com. This is a free WP blog hosting site that operates on a freemium model. Users can create and post on blogs for free but they can also opt to pay a monthly fee to get some extras.
So both the users and the business get what they want – both free stuff and paid services. Since the basic services are totally free, people are much more likely to sign up for it compared to a paid service. Once users feel that they like the service then they can pay more for additional features.
It’s the same for MMORPGs. Players can play it for free as much as they like then when they want to spend money then they can do so whenever they want.
I personally like that sort of thing! 🙂
